For the last few years we have talked about little else aside from why it is important to stay away from sunlight. We thoroughly understand the risks associated with it and do everything we can think of to keep it away from us. We choose the highest SPF sunscreens we could get and then slather on layers and layers of it. We wear huge hats. Even through the hottest seasons of the year we make ourselves wear long sleeves and pants. We often stick to the shade–some individuals may even carry parasols and umbrellas just to make sure they have exactly no contact with the sun. There is a fresh study that shows people who let themselves get some exposure to direct sunshine aren’t as likely to come down with MS as those who take steps to minimize sunlight contact on skin. At the onset, the study was more about Vitamin D and it’s effects on Multiple Sclerosis. It quickly became clear, though, that the Vitamin D generated in our bodies as a reaction to the sun’s rays is what is really at the root of things.

It has been recognized for some time that the sunlight and Vitamin D can be used to hinder the abnormal immune system workings that are thought to contribute to MS. This study, however, deals principally with the effects of sunlight on the people who are just starting to experience the very earliest symptoms of the disease. This study is trying to figure out the effects of Vitamin D along with sunlight on the precursory signs and symptoms of the disease.

Unfortunately there are not really a large amount of ways of really quantify the hypothesis of the study. The goal of the study is to figure out if sunlight can actually prevent the disease. Sadly, the only real way to quantify if this is true is to monitor a person over his or her entire life. This is just about the only method to seriously measure the levels of Vitamin D that are already present in a person’s blood before the precursors to MS start to become apparent. As it stands right now, people with typical sun exposure seem to have fewer MS symptoms, especially in the beginning, than those who live in darker and colder climatesbut this was already widely known.

There is also the very important concern that spending a lot of time in the sunlight greatly increases a persons chances of developing skin cancer. So, in an attempt to push away one condition, you could be causing yourself to develop a different one. Of course, when it gets caught quickly, skin cancer is very treatable and can even be cured. That isn’t true for MS.

So should you raise your direct exposure to the sunlight so that you dont get MS? Talk to the physician to figure out if this is a good plan. Your doctor will find out if you are at risk for the disease (and how much) by checking out your genetics, medical history and current health. From here your physician will be able to help you determine the best course of action.
